About Chant4Change

The first Chant4Change in 2009 brought together a diverse group of over 1,000 people in sacred song and chant. On October 8, 2016, raise your voice in song to heal the soul of America with thousands from across the social, political and religious spectrum. Celebrate our diversity from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial where Dr. King spoke his dream aloud to the world more than 50 years ago. The noise of this year’s presidential elections is loud and divisive. And the volume is increasing. If you love your neighbor without consideration of their religion, politics, race, sex, age, economic status, it may seem there is no place for your voice to be heard. Chant music has long powered revolutionary action from Gandhi to Martin Luther King Jr. Chant4Change is “conscious action” – an alternative to the negativity.

Why Chant?

In this momentous hour of need, just before Election Day, we will celebrate Chant4Change on October 8, 2016 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Thousands of conscientious people will gather to raise their voices together in the rhythms, languages and styles of different traditions, sending a message of unity and hope that will reach all fifty states and influence the world. Together, the peoples voice will be strong enough to clear away the divisive, violent rhetoric that has been blanketing our nation. Over the centuries people of all different lands have chanted and sung together for a variety of reasons:

To get a message across:

Chanting and singing together bonds us to one another and builds community. As our individual voices blend into a common aim for peace and good will, it produces positive vibrations that will counteract the forces of negativity and hate.

For fun:

Physical and emotional benefits have been associated with group singing. The release of endorphins in our bodies promotes natural feelings of pleasure and reduces stress. Children often naturally make up their own chants and songs. It makes everyone happy.

To make hard work easier:

We all still remember and sing the folk songs that fieldworkers and miners sang to make their hard work bearable.

To praise the Divine:

Chanting is a universal language of faith. Most spiritual communities use some form of chanting, singing or prayer; whether through the soft rhythm of an ancient tongue, the lyrical repetition of scriptures, or a joyful noise accompanied by instruments. St. Augustine has said, “He who sings prays twice.”

Many Songs, One Voice

Chant4Change is creating an opportunity where the divisions of race, age, gender, religion, or political view melt away, as thousands of voices infused with positive intentions and good wishes are raised as one. This powerful sound vibration will pierce through all negative barriers and will bring peace to humankind. Together we can make this change. Together each voice will be heard.
